Step 1: ) Download the appropriate SETI@home client.
Text based clients for UNIX, Linux, Win2K/NT/ME/98/95, Mac OS X, OS/2, BeOS
Note: It has been found that the Command Line Interface clients are significantly faster, minimium 25%. Use of third party software (SetiSpy, SetiWatch, etc.) to follow progress is recommended, but not necessary. SETIDriver & SETIHide allow for Work Unit caching and easier control of the CLI client. The CLI client can output data when run with the -verbose switch. For all versions of windows look for the 'i386-winnt-cmdline.exe' client
Windows 95/98/NT GUI SETI@home client
Macintosh SETI@home client
Note: To get the best Work unit times with the SETI screensaver go to display properties, screensaver, screen saver settings & check 'blank screen' & set it to no more than 5 minutes. Also ensure that you minimise the window if set to 'always run'. Stopping the graphics being drawn this way approximately halves the WU times.
Step 2: ) Make sure your Internet connection is up and running (Online) and run the client you just downloaded to install it. If you downloaded a text client, put it where you want to run it from first.
During the install, you may need to set a few parameters on the [SETI@home Preferences] window. The three parameters (Data Analyst, Network Connection, and Proxy) can be left at the default settings for most single user PCs that connect to the Internet via dial-up modem. If the PC is running on a LAN that connects to the Internet via a Proxy server, you will have to enter the proxy server’s IP address or DNS name in the HTTP Proxy box. The HTTP Proxy port number is normally port 80, but if your proxy server is using a different port number you will have to change it to the correct port number. A proxy setting is not always needed if you are behind a gateway (Sygate, Wingate, etc.) rather than a proxy server.
Step 3: ) The next step is to Log the client in, so that you can start looking for ET.
If you have a SETI@home user account, all you have to do is enter your email address and the SETI client will log into SETI@home and download a Work Unit (WU).
If you don’t have an account already set up with SETI@home, you need a VALID EMAIL address (that you have access to) to create an account. You need a VALID EMAIL address, so that SETI@home can email your PASSWORD to you. The password is needed, so that you can join Team AnandTech. On the SETI@home [Welcome] window, make sure "First time user (create new account)" is selected and the click the [OK] button. Fill in the appropriate boxes with your: nickname & email address, etc.. When you finish filling in the boxes, click the [Submit] button. After a few seconds, the SETI client will download a single WU to start analyzing.
Note: 1.) SETI@home uses your email address as your user ID. 2.) You can run SETI@home client on multiple systems using one account. However be sure you have permission to run SETI on other peoples computers. If you plan to run the SETI client on multiple systems just use the same email login account on all the clients. You will get credited for all the work units that are completed on all the systems that are using your SETI@home login account.
Note: 2.) Write down your password & keep it in a safe place!.This ensures that you can still alter your SETI account even if your SETI email address ceases to exist.
Step 4: ) The final step is to join Team AnandTech @ SETI.
