Not really a new member, but ModemMix has announced here he will reinstall the DNet client and join the team to help out in our cause of becoming and of course staying No. 1 in the RC5 contest.

Furthermore we have 8 new RC5 members:
talon99us, stealthassasin, jkprime, gaz, bossdrum, Gogga, steve and drdoug.

Dennilfloss and Adul are still adding to the ranks of TA. Take a look at this thread for Dennilfloss' achievements. Aduls' achievements be followed here

The latest reinforcements for the Seti team:
Garoz, Fardringle, Chooie, stevenwitch and Techie68.

They are all welcomed into Team Anandtech. We hope all the new members will be part of the largest distributed computing family for a very long time.

If we have forgotten anybody, please don't feel passed. It's difficult to keep track of every new member.
You can send a message to the editorial team, so we can put new members in the next newsletter. Please don't forget to mention on which project they are working.

Ranking

Project RC5

In this DPC-thread, a beautiful graphic, made by crisp, shows that TA will overtake Slash dot on November, 7th but if we do not pick up the pace DPC will overtake us somewhere near January, 16th.

Unfortunately, DNet is down for quite some time now. When rankings for this newsletter were supposed to be made, there weren't any statistics from DNet. Hopefully they will be up very soon.
Not for some figures now:

Block production Total no blocks Oct/28 Total no blocks Nov/5 Week production
Slash dot 484,612,242 XX XX
Team Anandtech 477,474,328 XX XX
Dutch Power Cows 386,081,440 XX XX
Member stats Nov/5 Total no of members Active members Difference (non-active)
Slash dot XX XX XX
Team Anandtech XX XX XX
Dutch Power Cows XX XX XX

Project Seti

Overall # ranking for 11/05 in the Club Teams category.

Local group production 11/05:

12 Linux..................................(+80665)........ +1424
13 OS/2 Warp...........................(+7236).......... +976
14 Team Nippon........................(+3500)......... +1608
15 TA.................339393............................... +1463
16 Switzerland..........................(-38728).......... +104
17 Mac Observer.......................(-39571).......... +742
18 Matrox User.........................(-51633)........ +1440

For awhile it looked as if Team Matrox User was closing in, but the tide has turned. The TA-Seti team is going well. The only minor point is the sudden rise in WU's of Team Nippon. To overtake this team, TA needs to pick up the pace. But, if all goes well they should be overtaken within a month. In that process it is most likely Team OS/2 Warp is overtaken also.

IRC Is Moving TA
First posting: Nov/5/2000 by Virge

"Well, due to #teamanandtech being the #1 channel on WorldIRC, we've been attracting more than our fair share of "lamers", who walk in to the room because we're the biggest. Rather than putting a bot or bunch of OPs in to patrol, it's been decided that we're going to move the room to our own IRC server. From now on, we'll be using irc.teamanandtech.com to link to our IRC server, starting now."

This message was placed by Virge. It is an important one for all those subscribers that wants to have a live chat with TA-members.

First posting: Oct/23/2000 by RaySun2Be

Unofficial assimilations thread! **Report recruits and/or new PCs added here** TA
First posting: Nov/3/2000 by Adul

A good idea from Adul and Train to start a special thread in which assimilations and recruits are mentioned. This way everybody is inspired and can follow the achievements of other team members. Dennilfloss is also going well, according to this thread. His assimilation spree hasn't stopped yet.

Sun Mircosystems TA
First posting: Nov/1/2000 by toph99

toph99 brings up a great idea, that might work. Call some big company and ask if they have some spare parts or obsolete machines, that can be used in a crackrack. In this thread he receives some tips on what might be the best time to call the companies.

Three months advertising space donated by me!!! TA
First posting: Oct/31/2000 by PeterN

PeterN donates three months of advertising space to the TA-cause. This space is available, because he bought some mailing software for the TA-newsletter. Included in the deal was the ad-space. Also he says, the first trial version of the newsletter is send to the group of proofreaders. As soon as the list is open for subscriptions, he will let us know.

Donations for TA Banner AD - Now at $998. CHALLENGE $1000 by Weekend TA
First posting: Oct/10/2000 by DanC

We're almost there. The banner for TA is still a hot topic. DanC challenges all members to try and reach the goal before the Sunday. All members are asked to donate money in order to try and get some banner advertisement space on a high traffick website. The goal is to reach at least $1000, so the amount is almost reached. At the moment of writing (Friday evening) only $2 is needed, so I think we're in business before Saturday.

An interesting means of donating someone else's money (not only for this, but for other projects as well)  is becoming a member of Paypal, an online bank account. They will give you and the person who referred you $5 each.
Interesting message from Paypal states, they have started international services in several non-US countries. This might give a boost to the advertising budget.

Time to pick a website for TA Banner Ad TA

DNET

This week the statistics server Tally of DNet has been down for a few days. In the DNet-plans Decibel wrote on Nov. 2nd, he's going to work on the problem. It's not likely the stats will be up within the next days.

Popular Power

An email from the crew of Popular Power has been received, in which was written:

Popular Power v. 0.3.1 is now available for download at the Popular Power Web site.
The most important changes are:
- PopPow is now capable of working in the background;
- PopPow is now multi-processor capable;
- The Linux version has some extended features;
- Version 0.3.1 is also available as Apple Macintosh client.

To date more than four million tests has been calculated by PopPow members. The tests use a computer model of the immune system, which is "injected" with different vaccine and virus combinations in order to better understand and improve vaccines. Because the flu virus changes every year, these studies are attempting to create an overall strategy that will help scientists when they choose each year's flu vaccine.
While the project is ongoing, preliminary results based on the findings of tests completed on member machines were presented on Sept. 24 in Crete, Greece, at the Options for the Control of Influenza Conference. More about the influenza-project can be found here.

The PopPow crew wrote, they are planning to start with some commercial projects this  fall. They are negotiating with interested partners. Revenues earned can be paid either to the member or to a charity of his choice.

The website- and statistics programmers are working hard to enable online rankings and a team-feature.

Hoe moet dat straks bij dnet? DPC
First posting: Nov/5/2000 by Grote_Smurf

Here some genuine concerns have arisen with Grote_Smurf. He's asking how much blocks will be flushed, once the DNet stats-server is working properly again. In a number of threads on the DPC-forum, a lot of people stated they were saving blocks until everything worked again. It is a good assumption, more teams than DPC are saving blocks until then. This might give another problem with the DNet keyservers.

On behalf of the DNet organization, we ask all TA-members not to save blocks. If one does feel the urge for it, then please wait a number of days after the servers are working again, before flushing the buffers. Otherwise we might have another outage of stats.

Blocks and Packets...I'm confused.... TA
First posting: Nov/1/2000 by Krish

A little (understandable) confusion has set in with Krish about all the talk of blocks, packets and work units. Russ' very simple answer explains all: "A WU and a block are the same thing. A packet contains anywhere from 1 to 32 blocks."

New additions to my small herd munching for TA! TA
First posting: Oct/31/2000 by GeoffS

GeoffS keeps us updated on the additions to his herd. Right now, he has 5* P3-733, P3-650, 2* P3-450, 1* P3-500 and 1* C2-566. Also, he has plans of adding about a dozen P3-800's. Let's keep it going.

TAcube vs Cubekiller DPC
First posting: Oct/30/2000 by Procyon

Here procyon is trying to get some miniteams to work together under one account. The purpose is submitting more blocks than Russ' TA-cube does and thus starting some psychological warfare. The DPC-reactions are not very positive, they don't see the need for it. In this thread on TA-forum, our members are made aware of this attempt and react to it.

Zijn er nog teams die flushplannen hebben ???? DPC
First posting: Oct/27/2000 by Proxy 71

This is still a hot topic on the DPC-forum with almost 3 pages of messages. Proxy 71asks the DPC-crew if anyone has plans for a team- or individual megaflush. A number of DPC-members are responding to it and numbers of 50k-1m are mentioned. The largest number mentioned by Proxy 71, lies between 700k-800k. Burat is talking about 200k and several others have 100k ready to be flushed. Aginor wants to pass not only Slashdot (/.) on December, 31th, but take TA down in the process.
If this will happen mainly depends on our reaction. Can we counter the attack? Yes, we can. The answer to the problem is recruiting more members and assimilating more computers.

Wierd SETI problem.. :( TA
First posting: Nov/1/2000 by Fardringle

When encountered a strange problem with the Seti client, Fardringle tries to get some answers from TA-members. His new computer (a K6-3 running at 600MHz) runs perfectly stable with various heavy-duty programs (3dMark, UT, and many other things), but the machine hangs after 30 minutes when running the Seti client v.3.0 (DOS and GUI).

Qythyx announces the use of 4 Quad Xeons (at 700Mhz each) for about 3 weeks to add to the OGR efforts of TA. This will help closing the gap with Slashdot for awhile. He added a P3-933 on a permanent basis to the project as well.

Anyone with access to a Beowulf Cluster? TA
First Posting: Nov/1/2000 by RaySun2Be

Ray found a message from DNet about using their client on a Beowulf cluster. It was not cluster-aware but by adding some additional software (MOSIX) in the Linux kernel it will run 'cluster support' out-of-the box.

Patting me on the back... I just OC'd my first processor! TA
First posting: Nov/1/2000 by DanC

Not really a Linux or Crackrack topic but worth mentioning in this chapter: DanC is in a euphoric state, since he overclocked a 300 MHz machine to 350 MHz. As he says: "Sure it ain't much to most, but I've discovered OC!". Later on in the thread, he proves he's hooked on the feeling: "I actually have 2 Duron 600's they do 900 and 950 respectively". Hopefully, he can overclock a lot of his herd.

How to run 3 crackrack boards on one power supply TA

POLL: What was your first distributed computing project? TA

Forum Announcement - Everyone with an @home.com address - WE NEED YOUR HELP! TA
First posting: Nov/2/2000 by TA Administrator

We have a major problem with ALL of your email addresses. For some reason, all of our email to @home.com addresses is being returned with the error message:
Reason: <user-name@home.com>... Relaying denied

This message was received from the TA-administrators. They are trying to resolve the problem, but urgently ask every subscriber, that uses an @home email address, to cancel the subscriptions to the forums. The mail servers of Anandtech are flooded with return messages.

SCSI Terminator TA - General Hardware
First posting: Nov/1/2000 by Viztech

Viztech is going to add a SCSI cd-rom device to his computer and wants to know if the termination of the SCSI-chain is optional or required. Our Lord Demios answers in an excellent manner, as does Radboy. In this thread Viztech asks for more assistance, but later on the forum he can tell the problem is solved. Viztech used Windows2000 instead of the Windows 98 version and that seemed to be the trick. You can read all about it here.

is het weer zover? DPC
First posting: Nov/1/2000 by mafmeisje

In this posting, mafmeisje (like the name, means something like crazygirl) is reacting to this thread on TA in which a lot of TA-reactions are given to the fact that some DPC-members are not only visiting the TA-forums, but also from time to time make some offensive remarks. mafmeisje is asking in the thread-title: Is it happening again?, referring to the above mentioned behavior. If this continues, she might consider joining TA, mainly because of "the immaturity of DPC-members". Some DPC-members are reaction in a very rude manner to her, like Mr. Atheist (Don't get fat, woman) or Frenzy (Shut the fuck up!). Happy is saying the only sensible thing in this thread: "Let's keep in mind each others feelings. We have a different kind of humor than TA'ers. If you visit someone, you're in their house and you have to adjust." Eventually everything got all right: "They laughed and kissed up".

New Version of Popular Power! TA
First posting: Nov/1/2000 by brian_riendeau

A new client of Popular Power has been released. The most important change is that now the client no longer runs as a screensaver-driven application only, but runs as a background process also.
Popular Power is working on a non-profit project that uses the computer time you donate to research ways to optimize flu vaccines, or the Influenza-virus project.
Some TA-members are interested in the DC-project and want to start a TA-team as soon as PopPow is offering that possibility.

TO ALL PROOF READERS

With the announcement of the website being up and running, I also got about 65 subscriptions for the newsletter. No harm done, but Mika already implemented the script, in which website-subscriptions were automatically send to my address. I can not separate these addresses from the initial list of proof readers. This means two things:

  • This will be the last of the proofreading newsletters. If any comments arise, please notify me.
  • Everything is going a wee bit quicker than I expected. I didn't have the HTML-code cleaned up, but will do so with the next issues. There might be some bugs here and there. If found please let me know.

Thank you for all the support you've shown and I hope I can count on you in the future for any remarks, ideas or improvements or work that has to be done.

In short

The most important event of this week, was the outage of DNets' statistics server. This has caused some members complaining about symptoms, that indicate they are addicted to these numbers.

Finally the website is up and running. This will be the most important event for a lot of people, especially to Mika, JHutch, Virge and BPhantom. They worked hard to get everything in place.

Another great achievement is raising  the money for the banner campaign. Led by DanC, it was a great success sofar. The campaign can begin, when a website has been found, that will more or less guarantee a big success.

To make this newsletter appealing to a broader audience, information about Popular Power is added. This interesting project will be monitored by brian_riendeau and he will report any news, that might be of interest to TA-members.

The last, but not least important, item to mention is the newsletter itself. Some minor bugs are fixed, thanks to RaySun2BEs' careful examination. Also some spelling errors have disappeared. There are now also buttons added, next to the main categories. These enable our readers to jump to the top quickly.
Some items have been added or relocated under the Editorial section.

The rest you should see for yourself.

In this newsletter, we have mentioned all the topics we could think of. Yet, not all of them are filled yet. This newsletter is meant to give the first group of readers an idea of what can be expected in the future. If any remark, idea or suggestion might arise, please don't hesitate to send them to the editorial team.
